Every believer has to respond in obedience to the call of God in their lives. In today’s reading, both passages focused on God’s call in the area of trust and the lives of his Children.
In Genesis 12-14, God called Abram from his native country and instructed him to move to a land that he would show him. It must have taken Abram a lot of courage and trust in God to take such a big step to follow God. God expects us to trust him Just like Abram did.
Similarly, Matthew 5:13-37 reveals to us the call of God on the life of every believer. We have been called to be his ambassadors here on earth. Just like salt and light, we are to preserve and illuminate the world in our daily lives and conduct, thereby pointing the world to Jesus.
Furthermore, as believers, we have also been called to a higher standard of living as we follow the example of Christ. We see in the New Testament reading for today that unlike those under the law, we now have a higher expectation in our Christian walk. The good news, however, is that unlike them who had the laws written on tablets of stones, we have the laws written in our hearts (Hebrews 8:10) and we have the regulator; the Holy Spirit who works in us to will and to do His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
Reflection: Have you answered the call of God in your life?
Today’s reading
Genesis 12-14
1 Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Matthew 5:13-37
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
