Day 28 (Exodus 16-18, Matthew 20:17-34)

Superhero movies are arguably one of the most-watched movie categories in the world. Superheroes are usually loved and respected for their powers. However, with great power comes great responsibility. We often see them struggle to manage their personal lives while they solve the world’s problems.

In today’s passages, we see some parts of the lives of two men who would have been considered superheroes in their day. Moses was Israel’s leader, chosen by God to deliver them from slavery. This made him responsible for their well-being. We see him interceding for them in many instances, standing as an intermediary between them and God.   We also see him getting worn out from doing it all alone until he receives wise counsel from his father-in-law.

In His time on earth, Jesus would have also been perceived as a superhero because of the miracles He performed and the authority with which He taught the Scriptures. Rather than seeking the spotlight, we see Him living and teaching a life of service, emphasizing that He had come so that we could do all He did and more.

In Jethro’s counsel to Moses, we are reminded of one thing: we are saved to serve and to raise disciples. The point of miracles is not  to attract attention and the spotlight, but rather the mission is to raise people as ambassadors for Christ.

God is not raising lone superheroes; He is raising an army whose banner is Christ.

3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”
