“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV)
The Roman soldiers’ double-edged sword which is sharper than a knife is used by them when they are on the battlefield. We have been considering the whole armour of God and today we will be rounding up the series by looking into ‘the sword of the Spirit,’ which signifies ‘the word of God.’
The Sword of the Spirit signifies the word of God because it is sharper than any two-edged sword used by a Roman soldier. Hebrews 4:12 describes it as having the power to divide the soul and the spirit and it discerns our thoughts and motives of our heart.
Our knowledge and accurate interpretation of the word of God is our defense when faced with attacks from the enemy. Without being armed with the word, it is easier to fall into the traps set by the devil.
In the Psalms, David says:
“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.” -Psalms 119:114 (NKJV)
The word of God is a light in the darkness and just like every product has a manual on how to use it, God’s word is our manual in life because it instructs us on how to live various aspects of our lives. It is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalms 119:105).
Knowing this, do not put the study of God’s word to chance. Create time for and let it be a constant in your life. Meditate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8). Have an active prayer life by praying without ceasing (Ephesians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
Finally, belong to a sound local church where the word of God is accurately taught.
CONFESSION:
The word of God is the foundation by which I live my life!
I find comfort and security in the word of God!
God’s word influences my choices and decisions.
