DON’T LOSE YOUR TASTE

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”  – Matthew 5:13 (NKJV)

When it comes to salt’s value to food, there are different opinions and ongoing debates. On the one hand, some argue that it adds no extra flavour to the food and on the other hand, the majority postulate that it has a way of richly enhancing the taste of food. Which group do you belong to?

Jesus, referring to us believers as “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) enlightens us about the significant positive and enriching influence our presence brings to the world around us. It means that a believer, who has become a partaker of the divine nature of God through Christ Jesus (2 Peter 1:4), can give expression to the life of Christ, show forth the praises of God (1 Peter 2:9) and spread the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ in every place (2 Corinthians 2:14).

Furthermore, salt is widely recognised as one of the most effective preservatives for preventing the decay of food and perishable items. Looking around the world today, we observe an alarming rate of widespread moral decadence. Nevertheless, our presence in this world can counter the growing moral decay and cause the spread of righteous living. However, being present alone will not yield this result, we must actively pursue that effect.

Despite its natural qualities, salt can lose its saltiness, thereby losing its preserving and enriching properties. This can happen if salt becomes contaminated with impurities or absorbs moisture.

Therefore, we are instructed “not to be conformed to this world” and “to guard our hearts with all diligence” (Romans 12:2; Proverbs 4:23). We must avoid contamination by worldly influences and continuously yield to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, ensuring that we bear fruit consistent with our nature in Him (Galatians 5:16-26).

When salt absorbs moisture and evaporates, the residue may look like salt but lacks its distinct flavour. Such ‘salt,’ having lost its taste, is good for nothing and will be discarded and trampled underfoot (Matthew 5:13). Dear believer, there is a mighty working power at work in you to wield great influence in this world for righteousness sake. You must not allow yourself to be ‘good for nothing’, having great potential but failing to produce the expected effect.

Note that the most prominent ways you can manifest your saltiness are through your conduct and words, so “ Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Colossians 4:5-6).

Brethren, by your very nature in Christ, you add flavour to the world and preserve it through your conduct.

You are salt. Strive to never lose your flavour for as long as you walk the earth.
