SUBMIT TO YOUR LEADERS

“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.” — Hebrews 13:17 NKJV

In today’s world, where individualism is celebrated, the concept of submission to authority can sometimes be met with resistance. However, it is a principle rooted in Scripture.

As explained in our anchor verse, mentorship is God’s idea and is essential for spiritual growth. You might never realise your full potential until you have the right teacher. In the book of Philemon, we see the story of Onesimus (Philemon 1:8-16). His encounter with Paul transformed him into a better version of himself, leading to a significant change in his character and status. This transformation is a testament to the power of spiritual mentorship.

Spiritual leaders are for the progress and joy in the faith of believers (Philippians 1:25), and it would benefit you to submit to them. The Bible shows us story after story of people achieving great exploits because they were trained by the right people. This is why you must be intentional about the church and spiritual leadership you choose to submit to.

Earlier this month, we discussed various important things to look out for in a local church. Once you have done your due diligence and found a church, ensure you are fully submitted to the spiritual leadership there.

The Bible provides numerous references that emphasise the importance of submitting to authority. It is God’s wisdom for order and accountability. Respecting authority is not only a social duty but also a spiritual one (Romans 13:1). Authority is established by God, and submitting to it is an act of obedience.

However, submission to leadership is not about blind obedience or relinquishing your values and principles. Instead, it is about recognising the authority and responsibility that leaders hold and respecting their position. Submission involves trust—that leaders are acting in your best interest and are led by and submitted to God (1 Corinthians 11:1). This is why it is important to be intentional about where you choose to submit.

Even as you submit, recognise that your leaders are not infallible and can make mistakes, so endeavour to pray for them (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

The instruction to submit in our anchor text comes with a promise of mutual benefit. When we do, their work becomes a joy, not a burden. This makes their labour over you easier and more effective, which is ultimately for your good.

So, from today, embrace Scripture’s wisdom—submit to your spiritual leaders, connect with your mentors, and experience growth. Pray for your leaders and let their guidance bring  you joy and transformation.
