WHO IS A DISCIPLE

“Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.’” — Luke 9:23 (NKJV)

In today’s world, many individuals identify as Christians, yet their lifestyles often contradict their professions. They may seek to follow Christ on their own terms, hesitant to fully submit to His Lordship, thus losing sight of the true essence of discipleship.

Who, then, is a disciple?

A disciple can be compared to a soldier who enlists in the army, bound to obey every rule, order, and command of their leader. Therefore, a disciple is someone who commits to learning from and following a leader, striving to embody and propagate their teachings. Just as the anchor scripture states, a disciple is expected to relinquish their right to self-leadership and become a beacon of their master.

As a disciple, in addition to surrendering the right to self-leadership, one must submit to being guided by God, relying on Him for correction, direction, and instructions.

An essential characteristic of a disciple is a fervent desire to learn. Just as a student in school focuses on academic excellence, a disciple immerses themselves in their leader’s teachings and follows their example (John 8:31).

In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul encourages others to follow his example as he follows Christ’s example. Similarly, a disciple mirrors their leader’s values, beliefs, and lifestyle over time.

Commitment to discipleship demands dedication comparable to a student striving for top grades. For a believer, discipleship isn’t a part-time endeavour; it defines their life.

Crucially, discipleship leads to personal transformation. A true disciple experiences changes in character, behaviour, and outlook on life through their leader’s teachings and example.

Furthermore, a disciple lives with purpose, aligning their actions with their leader’s mission and goals. Jesus emphasizes in Matthew 28:19-20 the priority of making disciples of all nations, expecting His followers to actively engage in this mission.

Every Christian is called to discipleship as a core aspect of spiritual growth. In the kingdom of God, disciples are called to be soldiers of faith, wielding truth and righteousness with unwavering commitment. Like soldiers in earthly armies, disciples follow Christ with absolute obedience and dedication.

Embrace the discipline of spiritual warfare, where prayer fortifies like armour and the Word of God is your sword. Stand firm against doubt and temptation, advancing boldly to spread His love and truth.

Let every step be guided by Jesus Christ, your Commander, who empowers you to conquer darkness and bring light to the world.

Dear believer, embrace discipleship and accountability to foster genuine growth in your faith journey.
