“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.”
1 Corinthians 12:4-7 NLT
Spiritual gifts are manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the believer. As we read in our anchor verse, there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, and they are all given by the same Spirit. One of such gift is the word of knowledge.
The gift of the word of knowledge can be defined as a supernatural revelation. It is the ability to know certain things about a person or situation, that you could not have otherwise known by any natural means.
A word of knowledge can come as a ‘knowing’ in your Spirit, or through visions and dreams. This gift often works in tandem with the gift of the word of wisdom, where God supernaturally reveals something about a particular person or situation and then imparts wisdom on how to administer that knowledge.
As with all other spirituals, the gift of the word of knowledge is not given for self-preservation or self-glorification. God has not given you this gift for you to use to show off. It is for service to the Church, for specific purposes like stirring up faith or providing encouragement and comfort.
You must also be careful not to use what has been divinely revealed to you as a tool to embarrass or take advantage of another believer. Instead, use it for the benefit of others in the body of Christ (1 Peter 4:10). This means that when God gives you a word for someone, you ought not to keep it to yourself, except so directed by the Spirit. You must endeavour to swiftly pass the message along, being careful not to attach any embellishments or personal additions. This is how you contribute your part to the Body of Christ.
Finally, know that as a believer, you can manifest the gift of the word of knowledge. The Holy Spirit is the source of all spiritual gifts, and you carry Him on your inside! Therefore, every single gift is within your reach. All you have to do is earnestly desire them, whilst keeping love and service as your motives.
