“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
James 1: 22 ESV
An American best-selling author, once said, “It takes courage to endure the sharp pains of self-discovery rather than choose to take the dull pain of unconsciousness that would last the rest of our lives.”
Self-reflection is a humbling process, and not at all an easy one. However, it is a worthy journey to embark on.
We took some time to reflect on the year we had yesterday. Indeed, 2022 came with its losses, wins, testimonies and victories but we are still here regardless. For all the times you cried, for all the times you rejoiced, all of these experiences came together to form a mosaic wonder of the year, 2022.
Our anchor scripture calls on us to be doers of the word and not only hearers. Week after week, we were privileged to hear the truth of God’s word. What did you do with it? Could you have done more?
Take a moment to think about this:
James 1: 23-24 tells us that a person who hears the word of God and doesn’t do it is like one who looks at himself in the mirror and immediately forgets what he looks like once he steps away. To us believers, our mirror is the word of God. Through it, we know who we are and we see ourselves as God sees us. How many times did you look in the mirror this year and forget what you looked like?
Answering all these questions will not be easy but it will be worth it as you go into the new year. We need to strip down anything that is blinding us from truly seeing ourselves. We need to dig deep within and bare our souls. Only then are we truly doing a heart check.
Ultimately, our purpose, our goal and the core of our existence here on earth is to know Jesus and make him known. It is the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20), given to us by Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. And this begs the question…
Did you do this word?
We have rounded off our Bible Reading Plan for the year. If you are yet to finish, take the rest of the year to catch up. We are cheering you on!
