“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 NLT
It is interesting to discover that the divine order of the revelation of God is first theological before it is experiential. Our opening text reveals that the Word of God was in existence before time began, and that the Word is indeed God. Without study of the Scriptures, one cannot understand this revelation. This is not a truth that can be grasped through experiences.
Let’s see other Scriptural scenarios that further that show us the supremacy of the Scriptures above our experiences:
First, Jesus confronted the Jewish leaders about their religious piety which was blinding them from the truth. Then, He made them see that the Scriptures actually points back to Him. John 5:39 NLT says, “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!”
Also, in Luke 24:25-30, Jesus walked with two disciples and joined in on their conversation, as it were, in a casual manner. Rather than make Himself known to them on the spot, as many of us would have expected in such a situation, He took them through the Scriptures to reveal His person and His mission on earth.
Only after helping them understand from God’s word how that His death was a perfect plan, did He reveal His identity to them.
In Paul’s letters to Timothy, we also see an emphasis on the Scriptures for spiritual growth. (2 Timothy 3:14-17)
The NKJV renders verses 15-16 this way:
“and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…”
II Timothy 3:15-16 NKJV
Amazing! The word of God has great power. It is not just texts and letters but spirit-inspired information that makes us wise unto salvation, teaches, corrects, guides and equips us for ministry.

Finally, Ephesians 4:13-15 reminds us that our growth in the knowledge of God is a sure proof against being lured by deceptive or nearly-true doctrines. It is to our advantage that we progress in faith, and this by the knowledge of God’s word.
Dear believer, today’s message is a call to honor God’s word above experiences. Even when considering encounters, the basis still has to be the word of God or nothing. His word is true and never fails; it will always stand the test of time. Look to His word and grow!
