GIVE HONOUR

“Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.” – Galatians 6:6 (NKJV)

Engines are described as the brain of a car, and like the human brain, they process all the activities of the car. However, no matter how powerful or brainy a car is, once it approaches an uneven or rough surface, it needs the less obvious but very important component, the shock absorber, to ensure it can cruise through smoothly, making driving more comfortable.

Church leadership encompasses a variety of roles and responsibilities. A church leader serves as a teacher, comforter, encourager, and prayer warrior for their congregation. While these roles are evident, it is noteworthy how much followers rely on their leaders. This reliance is rooted in the belief that, regardless of the issue presented, leaders can absorb it and provide a solution. Our leaders dedicate themselves to our spiritual well-being, acting as essential shock absorbers.

With all the input of our spiritual leaders to our progress and joy in the faith, our response must be that of overt honour and gratitude. From our anchor text, Apostle Paul urges believers to share all good things with their teachers. This principle is reiterated in 1 Timothy 5:18, which says, “The labourer is worthy of his wages.”

Our spiritual leaders labour tirelessly in teaching and guiding us, and we must recognise their efforts through acts of giving and support.

Giving gifts to our leaders is a way to express our appreciation. Proverbs 11:25 states, “The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.” By offering gifts – material or financial, we acknowledge the sacrifices our leaders make and help ease their burdens, allowing them to continue their ministry effectively.

Our time is another valuable resource we can offer. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “consider one another to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.” Volunteering in church activities or assisting with ministry tasks demonstrates our commitment to the community and supports our leaders in their mission, fostering a stronger faith community.

Furthermore, listening is a powerful form of giving. Proverbs 1:5 advises, “A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.” Giving our leaders our undivided attention during sermons and personal conversations shows that we value their guidance and wisdom. This creates a deeper connection and mutual respect within the church body.

In our anchor text, Paul’s directive aligns with the biblical theme of honouring those who lead us. Supporting our leaders through gifts, time, and listening not only honours them but also enhances our spiritual journey and the health of our faith community.

Beloved, let us be mindful and intentional in supporting our spiritual leaders. Whether through gifts, time, or listening ears, our contributions reflect our gratitude and recognition of their vital role in our spiritual lives. As Romans 13:7 urges, “Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honour to whom honour.” By doing so, we foster a thriving, interconnected faith community that honours God and His appointed leaders.
