The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found… Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Matthew 13:44 ESV
Our anchor scripture is a parable Jesus gave during His earthly ministry where a farmer found a treasure on a field and then sold all he had to buy the field. One can wonder why the farmer didn’t just harvest the treasure and sell it, thus saving some money. This is because although he found the treasure, as long as he didn’t own the field, he was not entitled to the treasure. Although this parable was to show the priceless worth of the gospel, it teaches us something about influence.
It’s without dispute that owners or people in positions of influence have a certain power over others under them. Paul tells Timothy to pray for those in position of influence because their actions or inactions can affect the church and hence the spread of the Gospel. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
This is evident in different parts of the world where due to policies from the government, the church is persecuted and the spread of the Gospel is stifled. If more believers were in those seats of government, the situation would be different.
For so long, believers have shied away from positions of influence and authority. This is a call to wake up. It doesn’t just apply to government or politics, but for every walk of life. We must have an overarching desire to see everyone saved and come to the knowledge of truth, and this must fuel our desire to take positions of authority.
Dear believer, in your area of skill or work, don’t be content with making enough to live on. Seek to come into positions of influence so that you can establish systems and policies that favour the spread of the Gospel and the growth of the church. The people of the world do it for money and power, we do it for souls. IT’S TIME TO BUY THE FIELD, lives depend on it!
