BE YOUR BROTHER’S KEEPER

“Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” – Genesis 4:9 (NKJV)

If you grew up in a home with siblings, you’ve likely heard the phrase, “Be your brother’s keeper”. It is the kind of reminder parents give when they expect you to stand up for your siblings. But what does it truly mean to be your brother’s keeper?

The Bible introduces this concept early in the story of Cain and Abel. When God asks Cain about Abel’s whereabouts, Cain defensively responds with the question: Am I my brother’s keeper?”. This moment reveals a profound truth: God expects you to care for one another and to be mindful of your brethren—both in family and in faith. Yet, as believers, we often struggle with understanding what this responsibility truly entails.

In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus uses the parable of the Good Samaritan to redefine what it means to be a neighbour—a term that, in Hebrew culture, also signifies a brother. Through this story, He illustrates that loving your brother goes beyond mere words; it requires compassionate and selfless actions. Similarly, in 1 John 3:16-18, Apostle John emphasizes that genuine love for the brethren is demonstrated through tangible actions, not just sentiments. To love your siblings in Christ is to be your brother’s keeper truly.

Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 13 serves as a glossary of love in the Bible. Your love for your siblings in Christ should be selfless, kind, and patient. Beyond looking for your siblings in Christ, your motive must align with the Scriptures.

Dear believer, God has called you to be your brother’s keeper, and this calling demands more than words—it requires action. Let your love for your siblings in Christ be evident not only in what you say but in what you do. Take a moment to reflect on how you express this love and commit to being intentional in your care and support for them. Remember, you are your brother’s keeper—so look always out for them.

SAY THIS: The love of God has been shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Ghost; therefore, I love my brethren freely and genuinely and show it in my actions.
