Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” – Luke 2:14 (NKJV)
Imagine waiting for years for a surprise everyone kept telling you about. It’s like being a kid on Christmas Eve, hearing whispers about the biggest, most exciting gift you could ever receive. Then, finally, the morning comes – and not only do you open the gift, but your vibrant expression of joy about what you received fills the whole house.
This is what the birth of Jesus was like, but on a far greater scale. Heaven couldn’t hold back its excitement any longer, and in one incredible moment, the angels burst forth in song: “Glory to God in the highest!” (Luke 2:13-14).
The excitement of that night wasn’t new—it had been building for centuries. Even the prophets, long before Jesus was born, rejoiced in anticipation. Isaiah wrote with awe, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given… and His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
David sang of a Savior who would rule forever, proclaiming, “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand’” (Psalm 110:1). He rejoiced and called us blessed; we to whom God does not impute sin because of Jesus (Psalms 32:2). They could only imagine the day the Messiah would come, yet their hearts were already filled with joy and hope.
We should also burst forth into singing, rejoicing and celebrating at the news of the birth of Jesus just as the angels did. Christmas is a season of rejoicing, a time to reflect on the magnitude of God’s love for us; in that “…God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” (John 3:16). This gift wasn’t temporary; it was eternal.
This joy isn’t meant to be contained. Like the shepherds who heard the angelic announcement and ran to see the Christ child, we too are called to share this good news. Our rejoicing should inspire others to join the chorus of creation in praising God for the greatest gift ever given.
Dear believer, as you celebrate this Christmas season, remember that you’re part of a much bigger story. Your voice joins the angels, the stars, and all of creation in declaring, “Glory to God in the highest!” Let your life reflect the joy of salvation and the hope of Christ. All of creation rejoices, and so should you.
