“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”- Romans 5:8 NKJV
Imagine owing a massive debt you could never repay. Then, out of nowhere, a stranger steps in and pays it in full. That’s a depiction of the love God showed you through Christ—He died for you even when you were undeserving.
Throughout Scripture, vivid metaphors describe the state of humanity after the fall. We became spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1-2), blind (2 Corinthians 4:4), slaves to sin (John 8:34), enemies of God (Romans 5:10), and without hope (Ephesians 2:12). This list is sobering. As the Apostle Paul lamented in Romans 7:24-25: “Who will rescue me, a wretched man?”
The answer is God’s unending love, expressed through Jesus Christ. As seen in today’s anchor text, God demonstrated His love by making a way for reconciliation. In His wisdom and humility, He stepped down, taking the form of a servant to save you from the wrath that will come on all unrighteousness (Philippians 2:7). When you believed the Gospel and opened your heart to His gift of salvation, your status changed—you became a child of God ( Romans 8:15, 1 John 3:1).
As His child, you are now His responsibility. He knows every detail about you, even the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30). He invites you to trust Him, to depend on Him, and bring your concerns to Him because He cares deeply for you (1 Peter 5:7).
Meditating on the depth of this love is vital for sustaining your fellowship with God. Isaiah 49:15-16 gives a powerful picture, comparing God’s love to that of a mother for her child. While a mother may fiercely protect her child, she is still human and fallible. But God declares through Isaiah in Isaiah 49:15-17, “I will not forget you! See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.”
It gets even better. Through Christ’s death, you have become one with God by His Spirit. You’re not just written on His hands—He lives within you! If you ever doubt His love, look to the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, pouring out God’s love in your heart (Romans 5:5).
God’s love in salvation is the ultimate expression of love. Before you even knew you needed saving, He made provision for your salvation. How should you respond to such a love? By loving Him with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37) and loving others as He has loved you (1 John 4:19-21).
