Have you ever caught yourself using unfamiliar slang and remembered you first heard it from a friend? That’s how easy it is for the people we allow into our space to influence our minds without our consent. As a believer, knowing this, you must be intentional about curating your circle and using the power of influence to your advantage.
The people in your immediate circle can significantly influence the trajectory of your life. Your closest friends can either strengthen or weaken your faith. Recognising that we were not meant to journey alone, God has blessed us with Ecclesia, the church community. It serves as a nurturing environment for fellowship, accountability, and growth.
The Bible makes it clear: “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20). The friendships you build in the church are not ordinary; they are rooted in Christ and eternal purpose. There are many examples of believers whose association with one another yielded good fruit.
The early church actively engaged in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, broke bread together, and dedicated themselves to prayer (Acts 2:42 NKJV). Their friendships flourished not through gossip or pleasure, but through prayer, the word, and a shared purpose. In Daniel 3, we see how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, with one mind, refused to bow to the king’s idol; it is easier to stand on your convictions when you are not alone. They also saw the power of God at work through their collective faith.
In a world full of trials and temptations, the association you keep will encourage you to remain steadfast in faith (Hebrews 3:13). On days where you are doubting God’s word to you, they will remind you and sharpen you (Proverbs 27:17). Moreso, when you are too weak to carry your burdens alone, they will uphold you in prayer. The importance of solid Christian friends and community cannot be overemphasised..
So, who are your friends? If your circle does not encourage you to pray, serve, and pursue holiness, then you need to reexamine it. God has already given you a family in the church, brothers and sisters who walk with you in truth and love. Choose your friends wisely, stay planted and enjoy the blessings of the true Christian community.
