“Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Proverbs 24:3-4 (NKJV)
Imagine a student who desires to graduate with distinction but refuses to attend lectures, study the course material, or adequately prepare for their exams or assignments. Can they expect success without putting in the necessary effort? The same principle applies to marriage. No successful marriage is built on wishful thinking alone—it requires intentional effort and dedication to learning.
Marriage is unique—it is the only institution where you receive a certificate before you begin. This means you may not be fully aware of the challenges ahead so prior preparation and continuous learning are essential. Albert Einstein famously said, “When you stop learning, you start dying.” This underscores the truth that learning is a continuous journey.
Proverbs 4:7 urges us to actively seek wisdom and understanding. This principle is especially crucial in marriage. You must remain teachable and humble, always striving to gain knowledge and wisdom on how to build a marriage that aligns with God’s design.
Your marriage deserves your investment—emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially. Never underestimate the importance of growing in your understanding of what a godly marriage should look like.
Here are some practical ways to keep learning in marriage. First, keep reading your Bible. Yes, other materials and resources help but take primary instruction from the word of God. Then, seek wisdom from godly sources. Invest in high-quality books, sermons, and teachings on marriage.
Third, you should also be open to learning from godly people and examples that God has placed before you. Ecclesiastes 1:9 reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun. Many have faced and overcome marital challenges; learn from their experiences (Proverbs 11:14).
Gaining knowledge about marriage is valuable, but knowledge alone is not enough—it must be put into action. Understanding without application is meaningless.
Dear believer, be intentional about learning and growing in your marriage, and with God’s help, build a union that reflects His divine purpose.
