“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” – John 5:39 (NLT)
Have you ever read a book where the story became clearer the more you read? That’s how the Gospel unfolds throughout Scripture. Once a mystery, God’s plan of salvation was progressively revealed and made clear through Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one central story—redemption through Christ (Romans 16:25-26).
The Gospel was not an afterthought; it was God’s plan from the very beginning. After Adam and Eve sinned, God gave the first prophecy of redemption in Genesis 3:15, foretelling Christ’s victory over Satan. Later, He promised Abraham that “in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:3), a promise fulfilled in Christ (Galatians 3:16). When Abraham declared, “God will provide for Himself the lamb” in Genesis 22:8, it foreshadowed that God would provide the perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind—Jesus the Lamb of God (John 1:29).
When Jacob blessed his sons, he prophesied that the scepter would not depart from Judah, indicating that the Messiah would come from the lineage of Judah (Genesis 49:10). The law and sacrificial system under the Old Covenant also foreshadowed Christ’s sacrifice (Hebrews 9:11-12).
In addition to being a king and prolific songwriter, David was a prophet who spoke about the coming of the Messiah in many psalms, often referred to as Messianic psalms (Psalms 2, 8, 16, 40, 41, 68, 69). One notable example is Psalm 22, which Jesus quoted on the cross, directing the onlookers to the fact that this Scripture spoke about Him.
The prophets provided even clearer revelations of the coming Saviour. Isaiah gave many prophecies about his birth, life, death and resurrection (Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7, 53:5-6), Daniel prophesied about Him as the Son of man (Daniel 7), while Micah prohesied about his birth in Jerusalem (Micah 5:2) and many more (Zechariah 9:9, 11:12-13, Malachi 3:1).
When Jesus came, the mystery of the Gospel was fully revealed (John 1:14). His life, death, and resurrection fulfilled all Scripture had foretold (John 5:39).
The Gospel is the central revelation of Scripture. From Genesis to Revelation, God unveils His redemptive plan through Christ. When you read the Bible, don’t see it as separate stories—interpret it through the lens of Jesus. Allow the Gospel shape your understanding of Scripture, drawing your heart closer to Christ.
