“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’” – 1 Corinthians 15:33 (ESV)
Imagine driving through a city with no traffic lights, stop signs, or lane markers—chaos, right? In the same way, relationships without clear boundaries can lead to confusion, compromise, and even spiritual harm.
As believers, our love walk must be guided by God’s Word, which serves as our ultimate traffic light system.Scripture is clear about the importance of boundaries. In 1 Corinthians 6:18, Paul instructs us to “flee from sexual immorality.” This isn’t a suggestion to tread carefully; it’s a command to run in the opposite direction. Why? Because sin, especially sexual sin, has a unique way of defiling not just our bodies but our spirits (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
In relationships, green lights are those God-honouring qualities that align with His word. For instance, a partner who encourages your faith, respects your boundaries, and shares your commitment to purity is a green light. On the other hand, red flags are warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored. Subtle compromises like cohabiting before marriage, dismissing biblical standards, or pressuring you to lower your convictions are serious red flags. Ignoring red flags can lead to heartbreak and spiritual compromise.
Dating and friendships are not just about feelings; they’re about faith. Romans 12:2 urges us not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This means rejecting cultural norms that contradict Scripture, such as the idea that cohabiting is harmless or that boundaries are restrictive. God’s boundaries are not barriers to happiness but safeguards for it.
Finally, remember that God’s grace is sufficient when we stumble. If you’ve crossed boundaries in the past, scripture assures us that if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Let His word guide you forward, setting the right boundaries, recognizing green lights, and heeding red flags. After all, the best relationships are those that honour God and reflect His love.
