RADICAL ALLEGIANCE

If you are an ardent sports lover who supports a particular team, you most likely know all about unshakable allegiance. On days when your favourite team loses, do you switch allegiance to the winning team? No, you stick to your team regardless and in most cases, defend them boldly because your devotion, dedication and love for the team remain unquestionable, win or lose.

On the other hand, showing this kind of love and devotion to God and the Gospel in our day is not popular culture. Many Christians who show ardent devotion to God may be looked down on or mocked for their convictions.

Regardless, as believers, we have been called to live a radical life of faith and allegiance to God and His purpose. This must be reflected for the world to see. Jesus, our greatest example, showed us what it means to be radical for God’s cause when He chased traders out of the Temple.

“To those who sold doves, he said, ‘Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!’ His disciples remembered that it is written: ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’” –  John 2:16-17 NIV

Here, we see that Jesus’ love and zeal for His Father’s house was so palpable that He took action, which was evident for all to see. His eventual sinner’s death for the sin of the world also made Him a public spectacle.

Dear believer, if Christ endured shame and the cross for us, you too can be bold and radical in your love for Him and His Gospel. Like Apostle Paul said in our anchor scripture, your service to God must be with zeal and enthusiasm. He also emphasised this in his letter to Titus:

“Who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” Titus 2:14 ESV

In your sphere of influence, let it be unmistakable that God’s love has completely consumed you. When workplace compromises are being plotted, let your name be absent from consideration because of your unwavering stance. Wherever you find yourself, let your conduct consistently reflect someone who is set apart and refuses to conform (Romans 12: 2). You have been commissioned (Mark 16: 15), and your attitude and demeanour must demonstrate this calling.

In the Lord’s army, there is no secret service. We have all been called to go all out for Christ in our service to Him. Today, and for the rest of your life, be determined to show your radical allegiance to God and His cause.
