“who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,” – 2 Timothy 1:9 NKJV
It is often said that “when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.” This saying also applies to our lives. We are created for a purpose, and when we are not aware of and walking in that purpose, we tend to mismanage our lives.
Our anchor text shows that we are saved and called to live according to God’s purpose. A creature cannot determine the purpose of its existence; its purpose is determined by its creator. Our purpose is predetermined by God, our Creator, and is to be discovered in Him (Ephesians 1:4; 2:10).
Purpose is that one thing for which you were created and at which you must succeed; otherwise, nothing else you succeed at will count. That one thing is to know Christ and to make Him known. It is in this that we live for God’s pleasure and satisfy His purpose for our lives (2 Timothy 4:7, Revelation 4:11).
Purpose is not a career, ambition, or personal dream. It is the very reason for your existence in Christ. Careers, ambitions, and dreams may all be tools through which you fulfill purpose, but they are not the purpose in themselves. The Apostle Paul understood this when he declared, “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ” (Philippians 3:7). His pursuit of Christ became the essence of his life, and everything else found meaning only within that context.
Living for His purpose means you no longer live for yourself, but for Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:15). It means Christ becomes the reason for every action, every decision, and every pursuit in your life. Purpose is not separate from your salvation; it is intricately tied to it. Christ saved you not just to escape hell, but to live for Him.
You live a purposeful life by consistently taking practical steps to win souls for Christ and growing in your knowledge of Him. To achieve the above, it starts by feeding yourself daily with God’s word, developing intimacy with God in the place of prayer, learning more of Him in fellowship with the saints and going into the world to evangelise. By doing this, you’re doing the will of God.
Dear believer, purpose is found in Christ, and since you are in Christ, your purpose is clear — to know Him, to conform to Him, and to make Him known.
SAY THIS:
I live for God’s purpose. I am saved to serve His will. I find fulfillment in knowing Christ and making Him known. Amen!
