“Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord” — Romans 12:11 (NKJV)
Picture a farmer sowing seeds in their field. If they delay planting or neglect the care of their crops, the harvest will suffer. But with timely action and attentive care, the plants thrive, yielding an abundant crop. Similarly, in our service to God, diligence and devotion are crucial for spiritual fruitfulness. Just as a farmer must act at the right time with commitment, we too must carry out the Lord’s work with care and urgency.
In our anchor text, Apostle Paul urged the Roman believers not to lag in their diligence as they serve the Lord. This instruction is just as relevant today. It’s not only a call to service but also a reminder of how we should serve—with complete dedication and fervour. God’s work requires immediate attention and should never be approached half-heartedly. Our service to the Lord demands the best of our efforts (Colossians 3:23).
In Greek, the word translated as diligence is ‘Spoude’, which, along with the word ‘Spoudazo’, shares the root – “Speudo.” This root word carries a sense of urgency, meaning to speed, to make haste, or to be eager. This underscores the need for not just doing what is right but doing it promptly and earnestly. God is calling us to act with both precision and speed, reminding us that our service must be timely.
Jesus has entrusted us with the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15). This divine assignment is not just a task—it’s a time-sensitive mission. Like David in 1 Samuel 21:8, who recognized that the king’s business required haste, we too must acknowledge the urgency of our mission. Proclaiming the Gospel is not something to be done leisurely.
Furthermore, consider the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30). The diligent servants wasted no time in multiplying what their master entrusted to them. Their prompt action brought reward. But the servant who delayed and did nothing faced severe consequences. This shows that our diligence in God’s service must also be marked by readiness and faithfulness.
Dear Believer, if you’ve been laid back, now is the time to rise to action. Our attitude toward ministry should reflect the importance of the calling we’ve received.
God is counting on us to be diligent, not sluggish in advancing His kingdom.
Whether it’s sharing the Gospel, teaching others, or simply living a life that reflects Christ, we must keep our diligence in high gear.
