MAINTAINING JOY IN DARK SEASONS

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33 (NKJV)

The Christian life is not lived in a vacuum. You live in a world where sin, evil, uncertainty, and pain thrive. The world is fractured, and as a result, even believers experience difficult seasons for various reasons (Romans 8:22). How should you respond in these seasons?

In our anchor verse, Jesus makes a very bold statement that’s worth pondering. He made it clear that living in the world comes with tribulation, but in Him, there is surpassing joy despite these challenges. This is so comforting.

Dark seasons may be part of the human experience, but you can control your disposition in those times. You have been called to live a life of supernatural joy. Others may have their emotions dictated by events in their lives, but as a believer, you can be joyful in every circumstance. Scripture tells us that joy is a fruit of our regenerated Spirit (Galatians 5:22). You can be joyful in all seasons because the Spirit of God dwells within you (Ephesians 1:13-14).

Another reason to rejoice in all circumstances is the assurance that your name is written in the book of life (Luke 10:20). Regardless of what you face in this life, you have the promise of an eternal home where there would be no more sorrow or pain and that spurs us to joy (Revelations 21:4). Living in the consciousness of what Christ has done in and for you is the key to perpetual joy.

In addition, Scripture reminds us that regardless of what we go through, nothing can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8: 31-39). It’s no wonder that Paul, writing from prison to the Philippian church, admonishes them to rejoice always (Philippians 4:4). In dark seasons, remind yourself that: you are an overcomer, you have victory in Christ Jesus, you always win! (Romans 8:37)

Dear believer, you are not a victim of circumstances. The joy you have is neither man-made nor event-sponsored. It is proof that Jesus won the victory on your behalf. Let this be your consciousness all day, every day.
