HAVE SPIRITUAL GIFTS CEASED?

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NKJV)

Imagine a farmer who receives a set of high-quality tools from a generous friend. Instead of using them, he leaves them untouched, convinced that his old, worn-out tools are enough. He struggles with his work as time passes, never realizing that the new tools could have made his labour more effective and fruitful. This is how many believers treat spiritual gifts—ignoring them or believing they are no longer necessary.

The question of whether spiritual gifts have ceased continues to spark debate. Some argue that these gifts were only meant for the early church, while others believe they remain active today. But what does Scripture actually say?

The Bible is clear: Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit to build up the church and fulfil God’s mission. In 1 Corinthians 12:7, Paul emphasized that these gifts are distributed “for the common good.” All through the Scriptures, we see various gifts in action — prophecy, healing, wisdom, discernment, speaking in tongues, and more. These were not just for the apostles but for the body of Christ.

Rather than viewing spiritual gifts as relics of the past, you must recognize their continued relevance. The Holy Spirit is still at work, equipping believers in every generation to serve, strengthen, and encourage the church. His gifts are not meant to divide or confuse but to glorify God and deepen your relationship with Him.

Today, countless believers testify to experiencing healing, prophecy, and divine wisdom—living proof that God continues to work through His people. God’s unchanging nature (Hebrews 13:8) reassures you that just as He empowered the early church, He still empowers His people today.

The question is not whether the gifts exist but whether you will use them. Instead of leaving God’s gifts untouched, seek Him earnestly. Ask how He desires to use you for His glory. Just as the farmer’s tools were meant to increase his effectiveness, the gifts of the Spirit are divine tools given to you for a purpose. Will you embrace them, or will you let them remain unused?
