GODLY COUNSEL

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”  – Proverbs 11:14 NKJV

God doesn’t only  speak through visions  or dreams,  He also leads us through the gentle wisdom of people who walk with Him. In a world filled with opinions, the right voices matter and godly counsel is one of God’s consistent tools for direction, correction, and confirmation.

Think about a time when you faced a tough decision, when prayer, Scripture, and waiting didn’tl seem to bring clarity. Then someone spoke; maybe a mentor, pastor, or friend and their words lit up your heart like a lamp in the dark. That wasn’t a coincidence. It was God speaking to you  through godly counsel.

Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern. Moses was burdened by the demands of leadership until Jethro, his father-in-law, gave wise advice that preserved his strength and stabilized the nation (Exodus 18). In Acts 15, the early church didn’t act on impulse; they gathered, prayed, and sought godly counsel before deciding on doctrine. God honors humility, unity, and spiritual wisdom in counsel.

However, not every voice is from God. That’s why you must test every word, weighing it against Scripture (1 John 4:1). Godly counsel will always align with God’s Word, never driven by ego, manipulation, or worldly logic. James 3:17 describes this wisdom as pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality or hypocrisy.

Godly counsel brings safety (Proverbs 11:14), establishes plans (Proverbs 15:22), builds wisdom (Proverbs 13:20) and is peaceable, pure, and without hypocrisy (James 3:17). For it  to work, you must be willing to listen not just when it affirms your desires, but also when it challenges or redirects you. The counsel of Nathan to David was hard, but it saved the king from deeper destruction (2 Samuel 12).

Prayer: Father, thank You for placing wise and godly voices in my life. Give me discernment to know which voices are from you and humility to listen. Guide me, Lord not only by dreams and whispers, but also by the wisdom of the righteous ones  you’ve placed around me. Amen.
