Bear The Burden 1 (Zeal For The Brethren)

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ”. Galatians 6:2 (NKJV).

Imagine two hikers with heavy backpacks making their way up a steep mountainside. As they lean on each other to lighten the load, the journey becomes much more manageable. The slope remains the same, and their burdens are still present, but their combined strength makes the ascent easier. This is what happens when we volunteer to help other believers carry their burdens.

In today’s anchor text, there is an instruction for believers to bear the burdens of others. This is a reminder that the Christian walk is a journey of selflessness. In Christ, you’ve been given a new nature, one that no longer lives for selfish ambition, but one that sees the needs of others and responds with compassion (Philippians 2:19-21). The second highlight of the anchor text is this: bearing the burdens of others is fulfilling the law of Christ. In Matthew 22:34-40, Jesus responded to a Pharisee who asked, “What is the greatest commandment in the Law?” His answer was simple, yet profound… ‘love God and love others’. As a recipient of God’s love, you are to love others (1 John 4:11). That’s how to fulfil the law of Christ.

In practical terms, bearing the burdens of another could involve emotional support, physical help, financial assistance, prayer, discipleship, giving them materials to help them grow spiritually or being there for them in their vulnerable moments.

By doing this, you demonstrate that God’s love lives within you. This is the example set by the early church (Acts 2:42-47). Those who were blessed shared with those in need. This created a spirit of unity, leading to miracles, joy, favour among the people, and the growth of the gospel. When you open your heart to love others and support them as instructed in the Bible, that’s the transformation that takes place.

Dear friend, life can sometimes tempt you to self-protect by focusing on your needs, lack, and burdens. You may even feel that you don’t have enough resources to help others. But God’s word stays true. You have been called to a life of love, and your heart should yearn with the zeal to bear the burdens of others, as much as you can.
