“From whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” – Ephesians 4:16 (NKJV)
When you walk into a restaurant for the first time, you expect a positive experience: welcoming staff, excellent service, and delicious food. That’s natural. You’re the customer, and the restaurant’s goal is to serve you.
The church is not a restaurant; it’s a family. It’s not just a place for us to receive services, but rather a community where we belong, build relationships, and grow together. Many believers treat the church like a customer service experience: a place to seek service, entertainment, or an impression, often forgetting that they are an integral part of the family.
As a believer, you are part of the body of Christ, and every part of the body has a function. You didn’t receive salvation to sit idly by; you received it to serve (1 Corinthians 3:9). You play a vital role in ensuring your local assembly thrives. So how do you engage and become an integral part of it?
Start by remembering it’s not about you. It’s easy to see flaws or focus on what could be better, but church is not a performance; it’s about Jesus. When you keep your eyes on Him, your posture shifts from one of criticism to one of contribution. You begin to see every opportunity to serve as a way to glorify God.
Then, plug in with your gifts. God has equipped you with skills and talents not just for the marketplace, but also for ministry (1 Peter 4:10). Ask yourself: How can I utilise my abilities to serve in my local church? Is there a team that needs my help or a department that could benefit from my skill set? There’s a place in the body where you fit perfectly.
Additionally, connect with love. The early church was known for its love and unity. They prayed together, shared what they had, and ensured that no one was left out. That same love is still the heartbeat of the church today. Growth occurs in community, and we grow stronger when we invest in others (Ephesians 4:15-16).
Lastly, make sure to contribute your time and resources. The more you give your time, energy, and even finances, the more your heart becomes connected to God’s work. Your investment reveals what you value. Every act of service, every hour spent helping, every seed you give matters in the grand work of building God’s house (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Dear believer, God didn’t just call you to show up at church; He called you to be the church. Avoid the sidelines; participate, build and help strengthen God’s family. The whole body becomes stronger when you play your part.
Today, take a step beyond just showing up; serve, love, and plug in, because the family isn’t complete without you.
