“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”. – 2 Peter 1:20-21 NIV
Have you ever received a prophetic word or instruction and quietly thought, “Okay… what now?” You believe it is from God, you are encouraged by it, but you are not sure what to do with it next. Many believers stop at excitement and never move into partnership.
In our anchor text, Apostle Peter establishes a crucial foundation: true prophecy originates not from human will, but from God speaking through His messengers. The same Holy Spirit who inspired Scripture is still at work today, speaking through believers to guide, strengthen, and direct His people.
When you receive an instruction or prophecy, your first response is not to act impulsively, but to test it with these two questions. First, does it align with Scripture? God will never contradict His written Word. Second, does it edify, comfort, or exhort you? Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 14:3 that these are the marks of true prophecy.
Once a word aligns with Scripture and bears the marks of true prophecy, take it to God in prayer. As you pray over it, the Holy Spirit brings clarity, peace, or sometimes correction. Think of Mary in Luke 1:26–38. When the angel brought her a word from God, she didn’t pretend to understand everything. She asked, “How can this be?” and received further explanation. In the same way, God is not offended by your questions; He invites you to seek understanding.
Next, write the word down. Scripture instructs, “Write the vision and make it plain…” (Habakkuk 2:2–3). Some words require patience, you hold them in faith and let them strengthen you in waiting seasons. Other words require obedience, you take clear steps as God leads. Wisdom is knowing which one it is. Don’t be passive.
Paul told Timothy to “wage the good warfare” by the prophecies spoken over him (1 Timothy 1:18). Prophecy is not a magic prediction; it is an invitation to partner.
Finally, respond with gratitude and obedience. Prophetic words are proof that God is mindful of you, speaking into your journey and guiding your steps. Thank Him for every genuine word, and then align your posture, plans, and expectations with what He has said.
Dear believer, you are not powerless or clueless when prophecy comes. Test it by the Word, pray it through, write it down, and walk it out. Don’t just collect prophecies; co-labour with God until His words become your reality.
