SPIRITUAL GIFTS AND EVANGELISM

“how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” – Hebrews 2:3-4 (NKJV)

Picture a tense courtroom: the plaintiff hurls accusations with fiery conviction. The defendant rises, presenting a stronger case backed by undeniable evidence. This picture mirrors our world — voices rising against the truth of the gospel. Yet God supplies the proof: spiritual gifts, signs, and wonders that silence every doubt.

From our anchor text, we see the significance of spiritual gifts, especially signs and wonders, in the delivery of the gospel. God went the extra mile to stamp the message of salvation with accompanying demonstrations of His power. That is why, as we evangelise, we should desire the manifestation of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31, 1 Corinthians 14:1).

The Acts of the Apostles provides us with countless examples of this. Time and again, the preaching of the gospel was accompanied by signs and wonders (Acts 5:12-16; Acts 9:32-35, 40-43). Apostle Paul also attested to this reality, declaring that his message did not rest on persuasive words but on the demonstration of the Spirit’s power (1 Corinthians 2:4-5; 1 Thessalonians 1:5). These accounts reveal that the proclamation of the gospel and the demonstration of God’s power are inseparable.

As you step out to share the good news, it is vital to remember that God desires to work through you in the same way. The supernatural workings of the Spirit are not reserved for a select few or the church walls only; they are for the field, where the lost need to witness His living power. Yet we must remember: the miracles are not the message. Instead, they validate both the message and the messenger as witnesses of the risen and glorified Christ (Acts 2:33).

Dear believer, when you step out to evangelise, trust God to confirm His word through you with signs following (Mark 16:20). But never make it about yourself. It is not to build a name or reputation, but to glorify Christ. Spiritual gifts are entrusted to us to serve His purpose—you are simply a vessel. Therefore, exercise them in humility and love, remembering that the goal is not applause, but the salvation of souls.

God still bears witness today through signs and wonders, and He delights in working through vessels that are yielded to Him. So as you go, preach boldly, trust deeply, and let the gifts of the Spirit validate the eternal message of Christ.
