THE CHURCH AND THE ARTS

“and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold and silver and bronze” – Exodus 35:31-32 (NKJV)

Imagine entering a cathedral where stained-glass windows glow with sunlight, each panel alive with the stories of scripture, and the music of a choir fills the air. As the images of God’s Word surround you and the melodies lift your soul, your heart is drawn toward Him, stirred to worship without a single word spoken. This is an example of the impact of art in the church.

Art has always played a significant role in the lives of God’s people. From the detailed instructions for the tabernacle in Exodus to the psalms of David, scripture shows that beauty and creativity can serve as powerful expressions of faith. When used appropriately, the arts do not distract from the message of the gospel; instead, they can amplify it.

Yet, it is important to remember that art is not an end in itself. Its true purpose is to point us to the Creator, whose beauty inspires it all. When you create or engage with art, it should always serve to glorify God and draw hearts closer to Him. (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Throughout history, when the church has embraced the arts with this focus, the result has been both evangelistic and edifying. Hymns have carried theology into the hearts of the illiterate. Sacred paintings and carvings have told the gospel’s story in cultures where the Bible could not yet be read. Drama and poetry have brought the truths of scripture to life.

However, when art becomes self-indulgent, or when beauty is pursued for its own sake apart from glorifying God, it ceases to serve the gospel and can become an idol. That is why your engagement with the arts must always be anchored in sound doctrine. Talent alone is not enough. Above all, your art must faithfully reflect God’s truth.

As part of the church, you have a role to play in using the arts to glorify God. In a world saturated with media, you can stand out by creating art that reflects His beauty and character. If you create, seek to grow in both skill and faith. If the creativity of others blesses you, receive it with an open heart and support those who serve through art so that their work points to Christ. (Matthew 5:16)

Dear believer, art that is surrendered to God will not merely please the eye or ear; it will point people to Christ.
