Bear the Burden II (Zeal for the Helpless)

“Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.”

Isaiah 1:17 (NKJV)

If God gave you His eyes for one day, you wouldn’t see just church services, prayer meetings, and sermons. You would see the hungry mother praying for help, the lonely widow forgotten by her family, the orphan with no one calling his name. You would see the people closest to His heart: the weak and the helpless, often overlooked by society.

Caring for the helpless is not optional for the believer. Your passion for God should move you to love, defend, and serve the vulnerable. That is what true zeal looks like.

Zeal is not just loud worship or passionate prayer. It shows up in how you live, what you stand for, and who you choose to care about. One true way to know your heart is aligned with God’s is your love for the people He loves. Scripture is filled with clear instruction: defend the fatherless, uphold the rights of the oppressed, and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves (Isaiah 1:17, Psalm 82:3–4). This is not charity. It is obedience. It is what a life surrendered to God looks like.

Jesus modelled this consistently. His time on earth was marked by compassion. He touched lepers, dined with outcasts, and restored the dignity of the broken. He didn’t turn away from the helpless, He moved toward them and He expects us to do the same. When you show mercy to the helpless, you are honouring Him (Matthew 25:35–40). Being zealous for the helpless means being deeply committed to protecting, supporting, and loving them with both passion and consistency. It is not an optional act of kindness. It is the lifestyle of someone who walks with God (Micah 6:8).

You are God’s representative on earth. The helpless should not have to search for signs of God’s love when you are present, they should see it in you. You have been raised to be a blessing to them, and it must show through your selfless generosity toward the needy, your boldness in standing up for the voiceless, and your consistency in prayer. These are practical ways to reflect God’s heart in a broken world.

Dear believer, your zeal must move beyond passion; It should be seen in your actions. Let your love for God be revealed in your love for people. Stand up for the helpless, be bold in mercy, and be known for compassion. This is what it means to walk with God.
