“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” – John 9:4 NKIV
There are certain organizations, like banks, that operate within fixed hours. No matter how important your transaction is, the building remains closed if the hours of operation have passed. This logic can be likened to purpose and the believer, there is a timeframe within which purpose must be fulfilled.
In today’s anchor text, Jesus made a striking statement that calls the believer’s attention to the urgency of purpose. He likened the ‘day’ to being alive and having the opportunity to fulfill God’s purpose. In contrast, the ‘nighttime’ is when no one can work – death. Being alive is a privilege; it’s your chance to do the work of the Father. Your existence on earth is time-bound, and as a responsible son, this should create in you a sense of urgency to make each day count for God (Ephesians 5:16-17).
In a world filled with various distractions, discovering God’s purpose must birth a sense of urgency in you. Each day becomes an opportunity to align even more with God’s plan, and your heart’s desire should be to make each moment count for God. Men and women who would do great things for God are people who understand purpose and urgency.
According to 2 Corinthians 5:17-20, man’s purpose on earth is to know God and make Him known. In Matthew 28:7, the angel instructed the women to go quickly and tell the disciples the good news that Jesus was alive. As one who has received a similar mandate today, you should also do God’s work purposefully and with urgency. Go hard after purpose, as if you are the only one doing it.
God is going to reward your commitment to His purpose and how you treated His work. In Matthew 24:42-47; Jesus taught on how to live ready for God. The key is to be a faithful and wise servant who does what is expected of him at the right time, not at his own convenience. When Christ comes again, let Him find you working. Like a firefighter who responds immediately when he gets an emergency call, you should have a mindset of urgency towards your assignment.
Dear believer, this is a call to know that your purpose is one of urgency; you must take advantage of every opportunity to see men saved. To make every moment of your life count, you should allow purpose to drive you with urgency. That is how to do great things for God.
