PROPHECY AND WORDS OF KNOWLEDGE

“For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit… to another prophecy…. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” – 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 (NKJV)

Imagine yourself struggling to find an interview location, misled by passersby, until you remember your phone’s GPS and reach your destination with ease. Likewise, as believers, we have an indwelling guide—the Holy Spirit—who directs, encourages, corrects, and instructs us. Two of the ways He ministers to and through us are prophecy and words of knowledge.

The gift of prophecy brings edification, encouragement, and revelation to both the church and individual believers (1 Corinthians 14:3, Amos 3:7). Similarly, words of knowledge help us understand the will of God and receive divine insight (Acts 10:9-16). Jesus Himself used this gift to reveal people’s hearts and minister to them, as seen in John 4:16-19 with the Samaritan woman. These spiritual gifts are given to strengthen faith, build up the church and confirm God’s word. Any prophecy or word of knowledge that does not align with Scripture is not from God, as the Holy Spirit testifies to and affirms God’s word.

Furthermore, prophecy should always point us back to Jesus; as Revelation 19:10 (NLT) states, “…the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.” These gifts also demonstrate the reality of God to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:24-25), revealing His presence and power. This is especially useful in evangelism, as some may not believe until they witness the power of God in action.

How do we receive these gifts? The first step is to be a believer, as the Bible teaches that the Spirit of God, who dwells only within believers, is the source of these gifts (Romans 8:9, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11). Next, understand that God delights in giving good gifts to His children (Matthew 7:11).

Nevertheless, it’s not enough that God is willing; we are instructed to desire spiritual gifts eagerly (1 Corinthians 12:1, 31; 14:1). And as we desire these gifts, when we ask, we receive by faith (Matthew 7:7).Understand that God’s gifts are not meant to lie dormant in you. You must stir them up and use them. The more you step out in faith, the stronger their expression (2 Timothy 1:6, Romans 12:6).

Dear believers, do not fall behind in spiritual gifts. Desire them, ask for them, and receive them. God desires to guide His people and reveal hidden and powerful things to those who seek Him. Spend time in His presence, pray with expectation, and when He speaks, step out in faith and act on His word!
