“Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV)
A medical doctor requires at least 7-10 years of higher education including clinicals and exams. This does not include primary and secondary education. An engineer spends over 5 years in the university, learning, practising, and staying up for countless exams and tests. The average person spends at least 4 years studying to become a graduate in their chosen field. On the other hand, marriage is a lifetime commitment that can determine the direction of your life. How much time do we invest in learning and understanding God’s design for it?
Building a successful marriage requires that you dedicate time to learning about it and how to navigate it in a world filled with contradictions. Getting knowledge is important to succeed in marriage. It does not matter if you are a scientific genius, you can still be ignorant about how to make a relationship work, which is why it is important to learn. Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians referred to marriage as a great mystery (Ephesians 5:32-33). We must not consider trivial what God has called a mystery. We must never assume that we understand marriage without first seeking wisdom from the word of God.
In the word of God, we find lessons, instructions and examples of what God expects from us in our marriages. You must also draw lessons from insightful teachings, books and sermons on marriages. A good benchmark for anyone intending to get married is to have read a good number of books on marriage first. It is important to intentionally study how good marriages are formed and sustained. It is equally important to consciously learn from the experienced, godly couples around you. When we intentionally seek counsel from people who are more experienced than us, we are better prepared for what lies ahead. (Proverbs 11:14).
Finally, you must rely on God for help. James 1:5 tells us to ask the Lord for wisdom because He gives generously and graciously to all. We must ask the Lord daily for wisdom to fulfil His will in our marriages, and when faced with dilemmas or decisions, we must seek His direction and leading for our homes.
Dear believer, stay ever learning in the school of marriage, by doing so, your marriage would perfectly mirror that of Christ and His Church.
