“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:16 NKJV

As children of God, the victory we have over sin is no small victory. That we who were once enslaved by sin have—through the sacrifice of Jesus—been given the power to overcome it? That we can now exercise self-control over our bodies and our minds? What a glorious victory indeed!

Acknowledging that you have been purchased by God is the first step to walking in this victory. It is only through Christ’s redemptive work that you can receive the power to live above sin. So, you know who you are in Christ, and you accept it as your reality.

In overcoming temptations and exercising your victory over sin, you must also acknowledge the role of the word of God. Like Psalms 119:11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” Christ Himself demonstrated the power of the word and His knowledge of it when He resisted Satan’s temptations in Matthew 4. You must know the word and live the word!

Another way to walk boldly in your victory over sin is to guard your heart. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23 that you ought to “Guard your heart with all diligence.” You must be mindful of what you watch, listen to, and read, the kind of company you keep, and even the conversations you have! Be intentional about creating an environment that allows only things that are godly to thrive.

You must also remember that the Holy Spirit is power in your life; not just to heal the sick and cast out devils, but also to live above sin (Romans 8:5-10). Only He can help you subdue the works of the flesh and walk in righteousness.

The place of accountability cannot be overemphasised. It is a preservation system for you. If you find that you are struggling in any area, don’t hide or pretend. Reach out to a trusted person in your circle or local assembly. This is why we have one another. (Galatians 6:1-2). If you are privileged to be the one someone comes to for accountability, remember that you are there to guide and help the person overcome their struggles, not to expose them or share “gist.”

It is true that temptation can lead to sin, but it doesn’t have to! When you are faced with temptations, you can say ‘no’ every time! Fight those thoughts with words. Don’t think it in your mind, audibly confess your identity in Christ and your victory over sin.

Finally, set structures to ensure that your fire burns consistently. Create a structure for prayers, Bible study, and other activities that grow your walk with God.

Christ’s sacrifice has granted you access to the Holy Spirit. He wants to help you walk in this newness of life. Allow Him.
