“We have come to know [by personal observation and experience], and have believed [with deep, consistent faith] the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides continually in him.” 1 John 4:16 AMP

Some years ago, a popular noodles brand in Nigeria made an unforgettable advert with a melodious theme song, and part of the lyric goes thus:

“To me, to you,
It’s up to us to make the world a better place…”

The song’s writer may have composed it for all kinds of consumers but more than anyone else, we Christians can make the world a better place. This is not because we are nice and cool people but because we are Jesus’ hands and feet on the earth and we represent Him in this world.

When you read through the accounts of Jesus’ life on earth, you will discover that even though He was God in the flesh, He was the meekest person the earth has ever experienced. He was full of kindness and He shared love all around, even when He didn’t have to.

Let’s take the feeding of the five thousand for instance. The people followed Him because they saw Him perform miracles, Jesus was very much aware of this fact and if all He did was teach about the kingdom and feed them, that would have been enough. But guess what? Jesus decided to feed them as well, even when the disciples had informed Him that there was nothing to eat where they were (John 6:2, Luke 9:10-13).

Another example of compassion Jesus showed us was when the woman caught in adultery was brought to Him. More than anyone else, He had the right to scold her most ruthlessly, in the name of correcting her wrong but He didn’t do that. Instead, He simply corrected her in love and in a firm way. He didn’t excuse her wrong, yet he was forgiving and gracious to her and even protected her from her accusers (John 8:1-11).

As written in our anchor verse, we believers have experienced the love of God. God won’t have us keep all the goodness we have received in Christ to ourselves, we have been called to imitate God in everything we do (Ephesians 5:1). Like Jesus, we have the Spirit of God, we have the Spirit of God in us and we are to show the love of God to others in our words, thoughts, gestures, and actions.

We must make it a culture to let people experience Jesus through us. We can be creative in our approach by giving gifts, praying for others, helping out, encouraging others with our words, more importantly, telling them about Jesus. We don’t necessarily need to wait for people to ask for our help but like Christ, we can be proactive with our love.

In this season of love and for the rest of our lives, let’s make sharing love a lifestyle.

DO THIS: Today or this week, do a random act of kindness or give a random gift to someone. It could be a friend, a family member, or a random person on the road or on social media even. Let someone experience Jesus through you.
