“The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it.” – Leviticus 6:12 (NIV)
Welcome to the 39th weekly devotional recap of the year. This week, we studied spiritual fervour and learnt the importance of consistent devotion and fellowship.
On Monday, we were charged to keep the fire on our altars burning perpetually (Leviticus 6:12). This requires intentional strategies to maintain all elements of a burning fire. Therefore, endeavour to build intimacy by maintaining a consistent prayer and study life (I Thessalonians 5:17, 2 Timothy 3:16 -17), and evangelism, which keeps your devotional fervour alive (Ephesians 4:16). Finally, ensure you have the right community of believers to keep you fired up (Proverbs 27:17).
Tuesday’s devotional taught us to fan the flames of this fire by maintaining a vibrant prayer life. A man constantly connected to God is a man on fire. As people who are not ignorant of the enemy’s devices, we ought to pray always and about everything (Luke 18:1). More than what prayer does for us, prayer is about communion with God. So, give thanks, express your desires, listen for His guidance, and always remember that He hears you.
On Wednesday, we were taught the importance of feeding our spirit with God’s Word. The Word of God is to our spirit-man as food is to the human body– a lifeline and source of strength (Acts 20:32). Intentional Bible study is the key to knowing and becoming more like God (John 1:1), better understanding doctrine (2 Timothy 3:16), building our faith (Romans 10:17), and warding off the enemy’s attacks (Ephesians 6:17). Prioritise consistent Bible study.
Thursday’s article urged us to live out our devotion by walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). How we respond to situations is directly related to the quality of our devotion. Our devotional fervour must be both vertical (Godward) and horizontal (manward). In our relationships with others, we are called to walk in love and strive to live peaceably with all (Romans 12:18). A key goal of a rich devotional life is a relationship with God that influences all areas of our lives.
We wrapped up the week on Friday by learning about God’s design for fellowship and community. The early church showed how a family knitted in Christ is a strong opposition to the devil. We must not neglect the fellowship of the saints because it’s God’s idea for us (Hebrews 10:25). Learn to be vulnerable and share your burdens with your brethren, because being part of a community is important for our accountability and growth as believers.
Dear believer, God has created you to be in a community and has put structures in place to support you in your Christian journey. So, do your part by fanning the flames and keeping your altar on fire.
Have a great Weekend!
