And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Luke 12:15 (NKJV)
“Money answereth all things”. This popular text from the scriptures reflects the value of money in meeting basic needs. (Ecclesiastes 10:19). Have you seen dire situations that could not be overcome with money? Or sicknesses that money and the best medical care could not cure? In daily interactions with people, have you come across those who have used this text as motivation to get rich so that their problems would get solved?
The reality of human existence is that money would never be enough and is less likely to grant you ultimate satisfaction. At the core, we all desire long-lasting peace of mind and will do whatever it takes to preserve it. So if you desire to be at peace, then money or the abundance of it cannot be your source. God is your ultimate source!
We live in a world that equates more money and possessions with true success. There is no danger in acquiring wealth; however, it must not define our worth. Jesus reiterates this in our anchor text- life’s true worth is not found in possessions. Money is an important tool that must be stewarded responsibly; we ought to set it in its rightful place.
An unhealthy love of money can distract us from our higher calling (1 Timothy 6:10). Of all the vices, nothing else contends for the place of God in our hearts than money. Money wants to be a god, it can harden our hearts. Hence, you must be on guard. Do not allow the love of money to control your disposition to life
We are beings created for a purpose beyond profit. Let’s examine our priorities: Are we accumulating wealth only for comfort, or are we using our resources to love, serve and glorify God? An inordinate desire for money often leads to greed, and a greedy person will lack discernment, which is important in fulfilling purpose.
God calls every believer to a kind of richness rooted in him. As we shift our focus from when we have to who our father is, we begin to thrive and not survive. One way to prove this is by practising generosity and honouring God with your resources.
Dear believer, refuse to let the pursuit of wealth distract you from the richness of God’s presence. It is your responsibility to put money in its place.
