GO FURTHER

“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” – Philippians 3:13-14 [NLT].

Starting a new year is like planting a seedling at the beginning of the farming season. No matter how big last year’s harvest was or how challenging it might have been, you don’t dwell on the past. Instead, you prepare the soil, plant with expectation, and trust God for an even better yield.

As believers, we’re called to approach each new season with faith, knowing that our best harvest is always ahead of us, not behind. Our anchor scripture teaches the importance of focus. It reiterates that no matter how beautiful your achievements in the previous year were, you should strive for more in each new year.

The story of Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration tells this lesson. In Matthew 17:1-4, while the three disciples were basking in Jesus’ glory, Moses and Elijah appeared. This rare and awe-inspiring event, known as the Transfiguration, was a pivotal moment in Jesus’ ministry, affirming His divine identity.

There, Peter was carried away. He wanted them to build three tabernacles and remain in the moment. Doing that would have robbed them of better experiences that were still to come. In the same way, relishing the past can deprive you of better things to come.

Nevertheless, as much as you are not supposed to hold on to your past achievements, you ought to look back and take stock of your past successes to build on them. In doing this, you would realize how far God has helped you.

In 1 Samuel 17:37, David reflected on his past successes and how God delivered him from the lion and the bear. This simple yet powerful act fuelled his confidence as he faced Goliath. The new year is not just a fresh start but an opportunity for exponential growth in God’s will.

As you make your plans, focus your attention on all that God has prepared for you in 2025. And remember, each day is a chance to reflect on God’s faithfulness.
