“And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you”. Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV)
Imagine embarking on a long journey with a heavy backpack, only to realise it is filled with stones—some you gathered yourself and others placed there by those who caused you pain. Forgiveness is emptying this backpack by removing the stones one by one. With each stone discarded, the burden eases, your steps grow lighter, and the journey becomes more joyful and liberating.
Forgiveness is an intentional choice to release the burdens of anger, bitterness, and resentment. By forgiving, you align yourself with God’s heart, experiencing the deep joy and peace that only He can provide.
Jesus taught us how to forgive not just once but continually as a demonstration of God’s love and grace. In Matthew 18:21-22 (NKJV), Peter asked Jesus:
“Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”
This response called for limitless forgiveness, showing that forgiving is an ongoing choice that should be made without reservation.
Also, while hanging on the cross, Jesus demonstrated the most profound act of forgiveness when He prayed: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34, NKJV). Despite the physical and emotional agony, Jesus extended forgiveness to those who had unjustly persecuted Him. His act of grace not only paid the penalty for your sins but also set the standard for how you should forgive others.
Forgiveness brings freedom. When you choose to forgive, you break free from the chains of bitterness, hatred, and unforgiveness that tie you down. The longer you hold on to grudges, the heavier your heart becomes. Yet, when you forgive, you release those burdens and make space for the joy and peace of God to fill your heart (John 8:36 NKJV).
Dear believer, as you fight for joy, remember also the power of forgiveness. It may be one of the hardest battles you would face, but it is also one of the most rewarding. Forgiveness liberates you from the pain of the past and positions you to experience the abundant life Jesus offers.
SAY THIS: As an act of love, I extend the grace which I have received, and I forgive others as Christ has forgiven me. Amen.
