Day 8 (Genesis 20-22, Matthew 7:7-8:4)

Have you ever been in a difficult situation where it seemed like God’s Word would not come to pass? In today’s reading, we see Abraham in a similar situation. After having his promised son Isaac, God asked him to sacrifice him. This must have been perplexing for Abraham but we see him obey without hesitation. Hebrews 11 sheds more light on Abraham’s thought process at this time:

‘Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead. ‘

Hebrews 11:19 (NLT)

Abraham’s faith is remarkable. At that time, no one had ever been raised from the dead. Still, Abraham concluded within himself that if God said His promise would be fulfilled in Isaac and then asked him to sacrifice Isaac, it was more likely for God to raise Isaac than to lie.

Furthermore, this incident was a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of Christ. Just as Abraham was willing to sacrifice his beloved son, God would sacrifice His beloved son for the sins of the world. Some theologians believe that Jesus was crucified on the same mountain where Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac.

God is Jehovah Jireh. He is providential and a Master planner. He cannot mismanage your life. Trust and obey.
